“I’m doing the best with what I have,” hits differently when I think about how this society shames us into hiding what it deems as the “unacceptable” parts of ourselves. We’re only “allowed” to show up as a small part of our human expansiveness. More like a mediocre sized part. And we wonder why we always feel like our best is not good enough. Maybe it’s because we’re never quite sure how much we have to hide or change ourselves in order to achieve the perfect amount of mediocrity. Or maybe it’s because we know we have so much more we could give if only we felt we could be ourselves.
